Abstract
High Nature Value farmland is used as an agro-environmental indicator in the EUROSTAT system and is defined as “the percentage of Utilized Agricultural Area (UAA) farmed to generate High Nature Value (HNV)” (EUROSTAT, 2017). The concept of high nature value farmland refers to the causality between certain types of farming activity and corresponding environmental outcomes, including high levels of biodiversity and the presence of environmentally valuable habitats and species (EUROSTAT, 2017). Typical HNV areas are extensively grazed uplands, Alpine meadows as well as pasture lands with particular interests for nature conservation because of their high biodiversity (Paracchini et al. 2008). The map presents the likelihood of HNV farmland presence in the Alps, indicating that in most parts of this area the likelihood of HNV is high.
