Title
Land use based on Corine Land Cover
Abstract

This map displays the Alpine land cover types and their distribution, and is based on an elaboration of the data from the CORINE Land Cover database.
The indicator shows the “Artificial surfaces”, the ”Agricultural areas” and the “Water bodies” first level classes of the CORINE nomenclature, whereas CORINE’s class “Forests and semi-natural areas” was modified: its two subclasses “Forests” and “Scrub and/or herbaceous vegetation associations” have been kept together, whereas the third subclass “Open spaces with little or no vegetation” is displayed as an independent category (“http://land.copernicus.eu/eagle/files/eagle-related-projects/pt_clc-conversion-to-fao-lccs3_dec2010”).

This reclassification allows to highlight the high share of open spaces with little or no vegetation within the Alpine region, and to distinguish them from the areas covered with forests or scrub/vegetation.
The map shows that the Alpine region is predominantly covered with forests and scrub/vegetation areas and that open spaces also take up a significant share of its territory. On the other hand, agricultural areas and artificial surfaces are not as extended and are primarily located in the outer parts of the Alpine arc, along the Alpine Convention perimeter or in valley bottoms.
