The term Permanent Settlement Area refers to the area suitable for permanent settlement and agricultural use on a territory. The data presented here display an Alpine-wide standardised calculation carried out by Tappeiner et al. (2008), which takes in consideration the settlement area as well as the intensively used agricultural areas.
Based on this analysis, and due to the topographic conditions in the Alps that limit the area available for infrastructure and urban settlements, about 17.3% of the overall Alpine area is available for permanent settlements.
